Who you are
You are passionate about maths. You have, or are currently studying to complete, a mathematical degree (e.g. maths, physics, engineering). Whichever is the case, it's almost certain you've benefited from great teachers, and, quite possibly, have at some time benefited from tutoring or mentoring. Why not channel some of your enthusiasm for maths to help change the life of a young person in your community? A young person who might not have had the same chances as you, but who is hungry to learn.
How you’ll inspire
As an Institute for Enquiring Minds mentor, you’ll be working intensively with a single student for up to 2 hours a week during at least one school term. You'll develop a strong relationship with your student and have the deep satisfaction of observing first-hand the positive outcomes of your efforts. It is difficult to overstate the magic that can happen when you, a passionate expert, works intensively with a young person keen to improve their maths skills and achieve their potential. This could be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life.
What you need
Aside from your passion, interest and maths skills, all that you require is a Working With Children Check (free for volunteers), which you can organise after signing up to become a mentor. Fill in the form and we’ll get in touch!
As a student from a disadvantaged background myself, it’s been fantastic to work with students facing similar challenges and imparting my experience upon them. I hope to convince them that they can rise above their past and achieve fantastic things too.
It has been such an honour to see my mentees grow and thrive, regardless of all of their challenges and circumstances. Having the opportunity to give back to the community by improving equal access to education and mentorship has been incredibly fulfilling.
My mentee is an incredibly bright and engaged student. It is deeply fulfilling to know that assisting with their maths is helping them to reach their full potential.
As someone who returned to university after a decade away, I’ve learned that time and resilience are our friends, even when progress feels slow. Volunteering here gives me the privilege of helping others find their own path. Keep going guys! No single result is the final word.
My grandparents finished school in year 6. My dad left in year 9 and my mum completed year 12. Education turned those sacrifices into possibilities. Maths is not just about solving equations — it’s about confidence, and realising that persistence can change the course of your life.
As a mentor, it isn’t about giving answers. It’s about helping students realise they can find their own.
